Bupropion (Wellbutrin)

What is it?

Bupropion (brand name Wellbutrin) is an antidepressant drug used to treat people with major depressive disorder (MDD), seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and to help people quit smoking. People who have abused the drug have described the high from bupropion like a cocaine or amphetamine high. Other signs of abuse are euphoria, a sense of exhilaration, increased sense of self-esteem, heightened energy and activity, and more.

Where do people get it? A prescription by a doctor or illicitly on the streets.

How is it dangerous? People who abuse bupropion say that it’s an easy prescription to obtain. Clinical studies show that bupropion abusers are getting a euphoric feeling like a cocaine high. Misuse of this drug can cause seizures within a few hours after ingestion. Other reported signs of toxicity include lethargy, tremor, vomiting, agitation, and death.
