Deciding to seek help with recovery id a significant step in your life. However, that choice can also come with some unwanted side effects and withdrawal symptoms. One of the most common symptoms is depression.

If you are suffering from depression, here are 10 tips to fight it:

Keep It in Perspective

If facing depression during detox, it is important to remember that it is a symptom of withdrawal, and the temporary discomfort is worth gaining freedom from addiction.

Exercise

When you exercise, your body produces endorphins, which boost feel-good feelings in your brain. A continued pattern of exercise has also been shown to boost moods long-term. However, make sure you know your limits and do not overdo it.

Eat Healthy

You can fight your detox depression by getting your recommended daily servings of important vitamins and minerals. Eating healthy and regulating your food intake will help you feel healthier and give you more energy, which will help you fight your depression.

Get Outside

Get outside in the sunshine (don’t forget the sunscreen). Besides replenishing your body’s Vitamin D supply, research has also shown that being in bright and warm light helps fight depression.

Sleep

Avoid being overly busy and neglecting your sleep. Doctors recommend 6-8 hours of sleep each night. Being properly rested will give you the energy to face the challenges of the day.

Start a Routine

A great way to fight detox depression is by setting a routine of healthy habits. For example, a morning routine of getting enough sleep, exercising, and eating a healthy breakfast will help you prepare for your day.

Try New Things

Depression makes you feel like you are stuck in a rut. Read a new book, visit someplace new, try a new restaurant, or volunteer somewhere. These will give you new experiences and take your mind off feeling down.

Reduce Stress

Do not overwhelm yourself with work and responsibilities. Make sure you have some time to yourself to relax and enjoy life. Learn to say, “no” to additional tasks that may cause stress.

Have Fun

Do not let the depression take over your life. Remember to smile, laugh and do things that are fun. See a comedian, go to dinner with friends, or go see a movie that you enjoy. For many, this doesn’t come naturally, so you must continue to work at having fun. It will come.
