Amid the busy schedule of a working professional, treatment for alcohol and/or drug detox may be the last thing on your mind. You may believe you don’t have the time or that you can’t take even a few days away from your job to complete a detox program. However, detox facilities such as Gallus Medical Detox Centers provide an environment where you can start your journey to recovering from SUD while being a busy, working professional. We offer you the amenities to ensure you can keep up with personal needs and provide you with assistance in the next steps that can ensure long-lasting sobriety while maintaining your busy schedule.

First Step: Recognizing Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

The first step in entering alcohol and drug detox is recognizing substance use disorder (SUD). Despite past beliefs, physical dependence on substances is now included in diagnostic criteria for SUD. Many people may not think they are addicted to drugs or alcohol due to the stigma surrounding addiction. When you think of addiction, you may think of someone who uses illicit substances, is homeless, and can’t keep a job. However, this is far from the truth.

SUD is categorized by severity based on how many criteria an individual meets. You don’t have to use illicit substances to become addicted. You can develop SUD when drinking alcohol, using marijuana, or even prescription medications.

There are 11 diagnostic criteria for SUD:

  1. Taking the substance in larger amounts or for longer than meant to
  2. Wanting to cut down or stop using the substance but not managing to
  3. Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from use of the substance
  4. Cravings and urges to use the substance
  5. Not managing responsibilities at work, home, or school because of substance use
  6. Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships
  7. Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use
  8. Using substances again and again, even when put in danger
  9. Continuing to use, even when it is known that there is a physical or psychological problem that could have been caused or made worse by the substance
  10. Needing more of the substance to get the effect desired
  11. Development of withdrawal symptoms

These criteria are divided into four categories: impaired control, social impairment, risky use, and pharmacological indicators (tolerance and withdrawal). The severity of the SUD is then determined by the number of criteria the individual meets:

  • Mild: 2 or 3 criteria out of 11
  • Moderate: 4 or 5 criteria out of 11
  • Severe: 6 or more criteria out of 11

If you believe you may meet any criteria for SUD, it is best to speak to a medical professional for a diagnosis.

The Benefits of Electronics in Alcohol and Drug Detox

The most significant benefit of having electronics during your detox stay is the ability to communicate with important people in your life. While this may include work, this can also include family and friends. These people can be essential emotional support during your journey to give you the hope and courage you need.

Having your electronics in detox may also help with avoiding information overload once you complete your detox stay. The stress of returning to hundreds of texts or emails can be triggering for people in recovery. If you can keep up with work responsibilities, you can avoid stressful emotions that may make you think you want to return to substance use.

Allowing electronics also eliminates barriers to treatment and, as a working professional, not having access to your work may hinder you from seeking detox treatment. By being connected to work, it may make treatment more possible for you.

The Timeframe of Alcohol and Drug Detox

You may also be worried about how long the detox process will take. However, there is no specific timeframe for detox, only general guidelines. How long the process will take will also depend on what substance you were using, how long you have been using it for, how much you have been using, and if you were using multiple substances at once. Substance types and the typical length of stay include:

  • Alcohol
    • Three to five days
  • Opiates: heroin, Oxycodone, Oxycontin, Dilaudid, Vicodin, kratom
    • Five to seven days
  • Methadone, Suboxone or Fentanyl
    • Ten to fourteen days
  • Benzodiazepines: Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Tranxene
    • Six to ten days
  • Stimulants: Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Dexedrine, Provigil, methamphetamines
    • Three to four days
  • Polysubstance (using two or more substances)
    • Typically adds an additional 2 days to primary length of stay depending on substance
  • Other: cocaine, bath salts, THC, spice
    • Three to four days
