The Dangers of Combining Lexapro And Wellbutrin

At Gallus Detox, we understand the challenges associated with mental health disorders and the quest for effective treatments. As medical professionals dedicated to comprehensive detoxification services, we prioritize patient safety and education, ensuring that our patients understand the implications of their prescribed medication. This article aims to shed light on the potential dangers of mixing two common antidepressants, Lexapro and Wellbutrin.

Lexipro and wellbutrin

An Overview of Lexapro and Wellbutrin

Lexapro (escitalopram) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) frequently used to manage depression and generalized anxiety disorder. It operates by regulating serotonin levels in the brain to improve mood and reduce anxiety.

Wellbutrin (bupropion), on the other hand, is an antidepressant that is often used to treat depression and help individuals quit smoking. Like Lexapro, Wellbutrin also has some evidence of improving attention and impulse control in certain populations, although this is not yet an FDA-approved usage.

While it may seem that Lexapro and Wellbutrin could be safely combined, given their different targets and mechanisms, the simultaneous use of these drugs can lead to complications and swiftly venture into unsafe territory.

Dangers of Mixing Lexapro and Wellbutrin

Increased Risk of Serotonin Syndrome

Mixing Lexapro and Wellbutrin can potentially trigger serotonin syndrome, a condition resulting from an excess of serotonin in the brain. This syndrome can manifest with symptoms ranging from mild (such as diarrhea and shivering) to severe (like muscle rigidity, fever, and seizures). Patients recovering from substance use disorder are particularly at risk due to the potential impact on the central nervous system.

Appetite Suppression and Weight Loss

Both Lexapro and Wellbutrin are associated with weight loss and appetite suppression. This effect can be exacerbated when the two drugs are combined, leading to significant weight loss and potentially malnutrition or other health complications.

Potential for Liver Damage

Although Lexapro is not generally associated with liver damage, Wellbutrin warrants caution. Wellbutrin has been associated with liver problems, particularly in those whose livers cannot properly metabolize the drug. Combining Lexapro and Wellbutrin could potentially amplify this risk, especially in patients with previous liver issues.

Heart Health Concerns

Both Lexapro and Wellbutrin can affect heart health, especially in those who have high blood pressure or have experienced a heart attack in the past. Lexapro is associated with a slight increase in heart rate, while Wellbutrin has been linked to high blood pressure. The combination of the two could potentially exacerbate these effects, leading to more serious cardiovascular complications.

Overlapping Side Effects

The combined use of Lexapro and Wellbutrin can also lead to enhanced side effects. This is because taking Lexapro can increase the blood levels of drugs like Wellbutrin. Therefore, taking your regular dose of either drug could result in unexpected side effects like insomnia, agitation, loss of appetite, nausea, and paranoia.
