The Gallus Detox Method
Dr. Patrick Gallus shares his thoughts on alcohol and drug detox methods:
“As an active Emergency Medicine Physician with 15 years experience, I have developed a method of treatment through constant trial and error involving multiple patients with various addictions. Rather than basing my methods on out-dated theories and models that are presently used in most detox facilities, I developed this method based upon on my personal experiences treating drug and alcohol emergencies.
“I became deeply concerned while observing the out-dated and even dangerous methods being used routinely within most detox facilities throughout the country. While studying this problem at length, I became aware of patients being treated in psychiatric facilities, protocols using out-dated oral medications, doctors making claims of rapid detox when the laws of physiological half-life support no such theory, and nursing staffs that are inexperienced in this critical-care setting. I also have serious concerns about the non-utilization of full cardiac and video monitoring by other facilities during this potentially dangerous process.
“This unfortunate situation prompted me to right a wrong and develop a truly world-class acute detox facility. At no time was any cost spared from the onset of construction through the smallest detail of treatment.
“At Gallus Detox we concentrate on treating every patient as a person with individual needs, emotions, substances of abuse, and outside concerns. The basis of our theory is to treat each individual patient safely, with respect and dignity in a timely manner. Our facility provides you a physically safe and emotionally hopeful environment to continue on to your next phase of recovery. Our treatment is based on many factors that change constantly. We pride ourselves in adapting your specific care to these changes on a moment’s notice if needed. Claiming to operate a world-class detox facility is a bold statement. My staff and I stand by this statement and truly believe we have achieved this at Gallus Detox.”
The Steps of the Gallus Alcohol and Drug Detox Method
- We utilize a Team approach. Our patient’s detox team includes Board Certified Physicians, Registered Nurses with ICU/ER qualifications, Addiction Psychologist and the patient themselves.
- A Psychological and Social assessment is performed to determine the patient’s mental condition.
- A Physical Assessment is performed including vital signs, lab testing, history, and a physical exam.
- The detox team meets to develop a customized treatment plan which is implemented immediately.
- It is our firm belief that IV-based medication therapy is the only safe and effective option to treat withdrawal symptoms.
- The patient is fully monitored with cardiac telemetry, video technology and personal attention from our Registered Nurses and Technicians on duty 24 hours a day.
- Due to the potential safety concerns, our method must be conducted by capable individuals with a long history of critical care capabilities and skills. All of our personnel and processes are in place to ensure effective and safe detoxification.
- Our team closely monitors the patient during this entire process.
- The patient’s privacy and confidentiality at our facility will be treated with the utmost importance. We can stay in close contact with family members and loved ones at the patient’s request.
Questions to Help You Compare Alcohol
& Drug Detox Centers
First, while talking with any detox center, notice how they make you feel. Do you feel they truly care? Do you feel they genuinely want to help you or your loved one? Do you feel you can trust them? In essence, do you feel they are nice? If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” that is not the center for you or your loved one.
Questions you should ask when considering any detox center:
- Does your facility use every available technology to ensure your safety? (This should include both cardiac and video monitoring 24/7.)
- Is the nursing staff qualified by emergency/intensive/critical care standards or are they psychiatric based?
- Does the detox center use IV-based medications to ensure adequate bioavailability and safety or do they place you at risk by using inexpensive and potentially harmful oral medications?
- Does the facility infringe upon your basic rights to speak freely and maintain open communication with your loved ones, friends or work?
- Is the facility located in a psychiatric hospital or is it an actual detox facility?
- Do they make claims that are physiologically impossible like being able to expel long term opiate use in a matter of hours?
- Has your facility made every effort to ensure your comfort or do they feel some humiliation and shame would do you good?
- Concerning extended care options, does your detox center believe that one size fits all?
- Is the detox facility affiliated with a specific residential treatment facility giving you no other options for aftercare?
- If you are critically ill can the detox center staff save your life in a matter of minutes?
- In the event of the need for hospital care does your center have a professional relationship or “transfer agreement” with the nearest hospital?
- Does the detox center have upscale private rooms or will you have to share a room with another patient?
- In addition to IV-medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, does the detox center also offer luxury amenities to make you more comfortable like gourmet meals, HD-TV, Wifi and massage?
- Would you consider your potential detox facility world class or just another detox clinic?
