Bath Salts Detox
Detox is a crucial first step in most people’s recovery journey. Detoxifying from addictive substances presents a number of potentially fatal medical risks, psychological challenges, and unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
What are bath salts?
Bath salts contain synthetic cathinones, such as methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and mephedrone. These manufactured stimulants are similar to cathinone found in the khat plant of East Africa and southern Arabia. The plant is chewed for its mild stimulant effects; however, the manufactured version is much more potent and potentially dangerous.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse warns that in some cases, bath salts are very dangerous. Public health officials call bath salts new psychoactive substances that have no legitimate medical use and have the effects of a controlled substance.
Marketed as bath salts, plant food, phone screen cleaner, and jewelry cleaner, synthetic cathinones are a white or brown crystalline powder that is sold as an alternative to other stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine. MDMA can also contain bath salts.
Like other stimulants, bath salts are chemically similar — affecting the brain in a similar way — but more potent. One study found that bath salts are ten times more powerful than cocaine.
Adverse effects of bath salts include paranoia, hallucinations, increased sex drive, panic attacks, extreme agitation, and sometimes violent behavior (excited delirium). Bath salts also mimic the adverse health effects of other stimulants, such as increased heart rate and blood pressure. Those who experience delirium often experience dehydration, kidney failure, and breakdown of muscle tissue. Injecting or inhaling bath salts has sometimes resulted in death.
How do I know if I need bath salts detox?
A detox program is used to treat individuals who are struggling with substances or addiction and may meet the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder.
Substance use disorder is a serious medical condition affecting an estimated 20 million Americans (SAMHSA, 2017). The effects of substance use disorders are wide-ranging and potentially fatal. Bath salts are addictive and may be challenging to withdraw from without professional medical detox.
There are many reasons why people don’t seek the help they need, including feelings of shame and fear about the process of detoxification. Many fear that detox will be uncomfortable, painful, and even fatal.
You will know if you need detox by seeking professional medical assistance from a qualified medical provider. Our admissions team would be happy to help advise you as to the best next steps.
Bath salts detox and withdrawal symptoms
Depending on the severity and frequency of use, detoxing from Ritalin may cause withdrawal symptoms, including:
- Intense cravings
- Impaired memory and concentration
We can help overcome uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms through effective, safe, and comfortable medical detox provided by addiction experts. Our patients are rarely uncomfortable because we provide an individualized plan for each patient and their needs.
Different types of bath salts detox centers
There are various types of detox. Not all detox options are the same, either. Many medical detox centers use outdated protocols and oral medications within the confines of psychiatric facilities, leaving patients feeling dehumanized while they stay in a sterile and cold environment.
