Detox is a crucial first step in most people’s recovery journey. Detoxifying from addictive substances presents a number of potentially fatal medical risks, psychological challenges, and unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
What is Kratom?
Kratom (mitragyna speciosa) is a tree native to southeast Asia and parts of Africa. Its leaves contain two psychoactive compounds (mitragynine and 7-α-hydroxymitragynine) that interact with opioid receptors in the brain. Kratom is used recreationally and medicinally as an alternative to formal medical treatments. It is taken as a tea, tablet or capsule, or extract.
In small doses it can produce uplifting effects and relieve anxiety. In larger amounts kratom mimics the effects of opioids and stimulants: sedation, pain relief, euphoria, increased energy, alertness, and sociability.
There are a number of negative side effects of taking kratom, including insomnia, seizures, liver damage, sweating, vomiting and nausea, sensitivity to sunburn, hallucinations, and even psychosis.
In 2017, the Food and Drugs Services Administration claimed that there are deadly risks associated with kratom use, and linked it to 44 deaths. However, a 2019 paper analyzing data from the National Poison Center found that there were only 11 deaths associated with kratom exposure, and nine out of the 11 cases reported also involved other substances.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, kratom may cause dependence, like other drugs that cause opioid-type effects. Therefore, stopping kratom use may result in withdrawal symptoms.
How do I know if I need kratom detox?
A kratom detox program is used to treat individuals who are struggling with substances or addiction and may meet the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder.
Substance use disorder is a serious medical condition affecting an estimated 20 million Americans (SAMHSA, 2017). The effects of substance use disorders are wide-ranging and potentially fatal.
Kratom is addictive and can be challenging to withdraw from without professional medical detox. Effects of sudden withdrawal can include the risk of suicidal thoughts, depression, and seizures.
There are many reasons why people don’t seek the help they need, including feelings of shame and fear about the process of detoxification. Many fear that detox will be uncomfortable, painful, and even fatal.
The reality is that detoxing from kratom is challenging without proper medical care. You will know if you need detox by seeking professional medical assistance from a qualified medical provider. Our admissions team would be happy to help advise you as to the best next steps.
Kratom detox and withdrawal symptoms
Depending on the severity and frequency of use, detoxing from kratom may cause withdrawal symptoms, including:
- Muscle aches
- Jerky movements
- Mood changes
- Runny nose
We can help overcome uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms through effective, safe, and comfortable medical detox provided by addiction experts. Our patients are rarely uncomfortable because we provide an individualized plan for each patient and their needs.
Different types of kratom detox centers
There are various types of detox. Not all detox options are the same, either. Many medical detox centers use outdated protocols and oral medications within the confines of psychiatric facilities, leaving patients feeling dehumanized while they stay in a sterile and cold environment.
