Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America’s Greatest Tragedy by David Sheff is a must-read for everyone struggling with drug addiction or knows someone struggling with addiction. In the face of overwhelming statistics regarding drug abuse and addiction, Sheff’s book get to the heart of what has to change in order to help the millions struggling.
About the Book
Drug addiction has reached epidemic proportions in America. More than 300 people die every day from drug overdose or complications of drug abuse and addiction. Nearly 10 percent of persons ages 12 and older struggle with drug addiction. Moreover, 90 percent will never get the help they need to stop using. The book is well-written and is comprised of eighteen chapters that are separated into seven sections which include: America on Drugs (I), Why We Use (II), When Drug Use Escalates (III), Getting Clean (IV), Staying Clean (V), Treating a Chronic Illness (VI), and Ending Addiction (VII). Sheff takes a meaningful look at America’s rather limited approach to drug abuse and addiction. Recognizing that addiction is a chronic disease, the author puts forward that it is a disease that can be treated. Sheff further explains that first we have to acknowledge accept that drug addiction is a disease, something that is severely missing in society today. However, once acknowledgement occurs, everything will change regarding our perception of addiction and how we, as a nation, address it. The author says that drug abuse is not about willpower or moral character. Drug addiction can affect anyone, at any time. Most people turn to drugs as a result of stress or trauma, due to genetic predisposition or from mental illness. Drug addiction may evolve from early drug use. Still yet, the author argues that drug addicts are not “bad people” they are people struggling with a progressive, chronic and often terminal disease. Sheff argues that until we reject the old view of drug addiction, things will not change. Additionally, many families will continue to lose loved ones to this disease.
