Lunesta Addiction

Eszopiclone is the generic name for the more well-known barbiturate medication, Lunesta. A powerful medication, that can cause addiction.

What is Lunesta?

Lunesta, or eszopiclone belongs to a class of drugs known as sedative hypnotics. As the class suggests, Lunesta is prescribed by physicians to assist with chronic insomnia. However, it should only be used short-term because it is addictive and therefore prone to misuse, dependence, and addiction.

Eszopiclone works by calming brain activity and slowing down the central nervous system.

Seeking help with Lunesta withdrawal

Detox is a crucial first step when stopping addictive medications such as barbiturates (sedative-hypnotics). In fact, it is recommended by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration:

“For alcohol, sedative-hypnotic, and opioid withdrawal syndromes, hospitalization or some form of 24-hour medical care is generally the preferred setting for detoxification, based upon principles of safety and humanitarian concerns.”

– SAMHSA Detoxification and Substance Abuse Treatment Improvement Protocol, TIP 45
