CBD, or Cannabidiol, is becoming increasingly popular to do its ability to treat a wide variety of health conditions and to alleviate pain. It has even been known to help with addiction by easing uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Because it does not appear to be addictive and often has minimal side effects, many people are switching from prescription drugs to CBD.

What Is CBD and What Are Its Uses to Alleviate Pain?

CBD is a compound derived from the cannabis plant. It is sometimes confused with Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, another active ingredient within the cannabis plant. THC causes a high while CBD does not. THC is used solely recreationally and has no effect on alleviating pain. CBD, however, positively impacts the brain by breaking down a chemical that affects mental function, mood, and an individual’s reaction to pain. It has proven to, in some cases, treat conditions such as:

  • Epilepsy
  • Schizophrenia
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Parkinson’s Disorder
  • Insomnia and other sleep issues
  • Nerve Damage
  • Arthritis and other types of joint problems
  • Withdrawals associated with smoking or substance misuse

CBD can be taken orally in the form of a pill or used in other forms such as lotions, salves, patches, or oils. Because the FDA has only conducted preliminary research into CBD, they have not released a comprehensive list of possible side effects the drug could yield. However, CBD has resulted in gastrointestinal issues for some individuals. It can also cause irritability or changes in appetite. Possible side effects can be exacerbated if CBD is taken in combination with alcohol or other drugs. If a woman is pregnant or breastfeeding and uses CBD, she may face an increased risk of possible side effects. The long-term side effects of CBD use are not yet known. An individual should consult their doctor before taking CBD products, especially if they are already on medication or have any medical conditions.

The laws regarding CBD use and sales vary from state to state and have frequently changed throughout recent years. The FDA has not approved a marketing application for cannabis for the treatment of any health-related condition.

Research Surrounding CBD and Alleviating Pain

In 2020, the United States National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health released a review of CBD based upon the results of 25 different studies with 927 total patients. The studies were focused on both male and female adults who took CBD orally. They found evidence, although low, that acute oral administration of CBD can lead to an anxiolytic or anti-anxiety effect. They found moderate evidence that CBD can treat schizophrenia. However, they noted that additional studies need to be conducted to be able to say that CBD can treat other conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or dyslipidemia.

In a second review, the National Library of Medicine looked explicitly at CBD’s ability to manage pain. They determined that CBD can be used as either a primary or supplementary treatment for chronic pain. Additional research found that CBD targets α3 glycine receptors, which suppresses inflammation and eases neuropathic pain.

It is important to note that there are many CBD items on the market, and some are mislabeled or do not have the same effects that they claim to. They may cause a placebo effect that leads an individual to continue to take them, despite not getting any benefit from them. Some of these mislabeled CBD products may even contain toxic ingredients that could be dangerous.

Why Are People Switching to CBD From Prescription Drugs?

There are many reasons why people are choosing to forgo prescription drugs and opt for CBD products instead. One primary reason is that CBD does not appear to be addictive. If an individual has a history of substance misuse or simply doesn’t want to run the risk of possibly becoming dependent on a medication, they may feel more comfortable taking CBD instead. Other individuals may choose to use CBD because it can treat a wide variety of ailments. For example, an individual may want to take CBD to help prevent seizures and enjoy other benefits such as reduced anxiety or relief from sleep problems.

How Do I Know What CBD Brand to Buy?

It can be challenging to know what kind of brand of CBD to purchase but examining the label can be an excellent place to start. A reputable CBD brand will usually include the following information on the label:

  • Supplement fact panel
  • Net weight
  • Suggested Use
  • Distributor Name
  • Amount of CBD per serving
  • Batch or date code

More and more research is being conducted regarding CBD every day. Studies have found that CBD can provide relief for a wide variety of ailments such as epilepsy, anxiety, and withdrawal associated with substance misuse. It can also suppress inflammation and ease neuropathic pain. However, an individual should be careful when choosing a CBD product because many of the types available on the market are mislabeled and could contain toxic ingredients. A lot more research needs to be conducted in order to fully understand the long-term side effects of CBD use.
