What Is Morphine?

Morphine is a narcotic pain reliever. The rapid-acting drug affects the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. It is primarily used to treat moderate to severe pain, as well as pulmonary edema, fluid accumulation in the lungs. comes as a tablet, liquid or capsule. It binds to the receptors and has a higher incidence of respiratory depression, sedation or euphoria.

Drinking alcohol while taking morphine is NOT recommended. When alcohol is combined with morphine, dangerous or life-threatening conditions may occur.

The Dangers and Symptoms of Morphine Abuse

The use of Morphine has increased dramatically in recent years. The euphoric effects, produced by the drug, can be highly-addictive and produce physical and psychological dependence. Morphine can activate brain reward mechanisms and chemically alter their normal functioning.

In addition, Morphine users will need higher and higher doses to maintain the same effect. Ongoing drug abuse may significantly impair mental and physical performance and reduce a person’s level of consciousness. Morphine could also cause harm to an unborn baby and even result in addiction or withdrawal symptoms in a newborn.

Studies show that when it comes to pain management, no other drug is more effective than Morphine. However, even when used as prescribed, it can quickly become addictive and long-term use may have some serious side effects:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Sweating
  • Confusion
  • Stiff muscles
  • Mood swings
  • Agitation

Some side effects can be serious and immediate medical assistance is needed for the following symptoms:

  • Slow, shallow or irregular breathing
  • Seizures
  • Fast or slow heartbeat
  • Blurred vision
  • Hallucinations, and other severe effects.

Morphine Withdrawal Symptoms

Sudden discontinuation of the drug without medical supervision may result in mild withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, yawning, sweating, chills and may last up to three days but more dangerous symptoms may include emotional and psychological trauma, stroke, heart attack and even death.
