What Is Marijuana?

Marijuana contains a mix of flowers, seeds and leaves derived from Cannabis Sativa, a fast-growing plant with a long history of industrial, medical and recreational use. It is one of the most commonly abused drugs in the United States. The active ingredients found in Cannabis Sativa can potentially relieve pain, control nausea, improve appetite or decrease ocular pressure. Not surprisingly, the medicinal properties of Marijuana have been the subject of extensive research and passionate debate.

In most cases, Marijuana is being smoked as a cigarette, combining the drug’s active ingredients with nicotine and other harmful substances. In addition, Marijuana can be mixed with food or brewed as a tea. When someone inhales Marijuana, its main chemical passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, then gets distributed to the brain and other organs of the body. When this chemical acts upon specific sites of the brain, it kicks off a series of cellular reactions that ultimately result in intense euphoria and a sense of well-being.

Marijuana intake can also impact the thought process, concentration levels, sensory and time perception, and movement. Therefore, Marijuana users typically have a hard time learning, staying focused, solving problems or memorizing certain things. Individuals who smoke Marijuana on a daily basis, tend to function at a suboptimal intellectual level.

The Dangers and Symptoms of Marijuana Abuse

Consistent abuse of Marijuana may lead to physical and psychological dependence, ruining personal relationships and destroying careers and finances. Those most susceptible to addiction, can develop dependence very rapidly. As a matter of fact, Marijuana addicts report having an instant attraction to the drug right after the first use. As a result, compulsive drug seeking becomes part of life, disrupting families, decreasing productivity, and producing serious health issues. It is important to note that Marijuana dramatically increases the heart rate shortly after smoking, and the smoke contains carcinogens and irritates the lungs.

Chronic use among young adults and teenagers may pose serious risks for mental illness, depending on their genetics and environmental vulnerabilities. Furthermore, high doses of the drug may produce an acute psychotic reaction. Some studies suggest that prolonged use of Marijuana may trigger the onset or relapse of schizophrenia.

Individuals abusing Marijuana may experience symptoms of tremors, decreased coordination, decreased cerebral blood flow, headaches, nausea, dry mouth, anxiety, panic attacks, hallucinations, confusion, aggressiveness, etc. Long-term Marijuana abusers who attempt to get off the drug on their own usually experience severe side effects. Withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Insomnia
  • Decreased appetite
  • Anxiety
  • Drug cravings and other unpleasant symptoms
