Prescription Drug Abuse
Prescription drugs are those that are prescribed by a licensed professional, such as a physician, veterinarian, or dentist. Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem among teens, where they may steal the drugs from parents. Some of the more common prescription drugs of abuse are OxyContin, Percoset, Vicodin, Valium, Xanax, and certain stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall, and Dexadrine.
Prescription drug abuse is of particular concern for professionals that become addicted and fail to manage the professional and/or personal life owing to the addiction. In addition, persons may steal prescription drugs for recreation use, but may eventually become addicted, often requiring drug detox. The following represent some of the common prescription drug addiction areas and our programs.
Antidepressant Abuse:
Antidepressants are commonly prescribed drugs which have substantial abuse potential. Our physicians can assist with anti-depressant detox. Antidepressants are generally categorized into several classes or categories, including SSRIs (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), SNRIs (Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), NRIs (Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), Norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors, TCAs (Tricyclic antidepressants), MAOIs (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors), NASSAa (Noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants).
Benzodiazepines (Anti-Anxiety Drugs) Addiction:
Benzodiazepines, such as Valium and Xanax, are commonly prescribed to treat anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, or other disorders. Although benzodiazepams are generally considered safe, long term use can cause dependency. Some of the more commonly prescribed benzodiazepams are Xanax, Valium, Halcion, Buspar, Restoril, and Ativan. Withdraw from these drugs can manifest as depression, tremors, insomnia, fear and anxiety. Our experts can assist in detoxification from benzodiazepams.
Prescription Opiate Abuse:
Our opiate detox program focuses on a variety of opiates, including natural and synthetic narcotics such as morphine, codeine, oxycodone, oxycontin and hydrocodone. Opiate addiction (narcotic addiction) is often encountered when the patient becomes addicted after receiving opiates for pain control. Opiates work by blocking pain perception, and can often provide the patient a sense of euphoria. This strong euphoric sensation can be very addictive. In addition, relief from pain is also a compelling reason that many become addicted to prescription pain drugs. When persons stop taking the opiate, they may experience withdrawal which can be very uncomfortable.
Street Drug Abuse
Street drug abuse can refer to a variety of different substance abuse problems. Street drugs are those that are sold on the street illegally, ranging from homemade street drugs such as crack cocaine, meth, and heroin to prescription drugs that are stolen and sold on the street. Therefore, street drugs are a catchall phrase where a person obtains the drug usually from a drug dealer. Many professionals refer to street drugs as recreational drugs, often using these to escape the stress of work. The use may initially start as weekend use, but can often spiral into daily use and abuse which can affect personal and professional situations.
Other common street drugs are classed as hallucinogens. Hallucinogens are drugs which alter perception, such a visual, hearing, smell and even touch perceptions. Drugs such as LSD, Ecstasy (often spelled Extasy), and certain mushrooms (often called magic mushrooms) can cause hallucinations.
Heroin and Opiate Addiction:
Heroin addiction is one of the most challenging of all drug addictions to overcome. Heroin withdrawal can be physically and emotionally demanding, so having medical experts assist in heroin detox is very important. Heroin, a morphine derivative, is a potent opiate from the opium poppy plant. Heroin is often referred to as smack, horse, black tar, brown sugar, mud, big H, or skag. The use of heroin can result in rapid heroin addiction. Heroin addiction is often devastating to the addict causing social, financial, and emotional struggles. Without intervention, many heroin addicts never recover. Heroin detox is the first step in recovery. Our heroin detox experts provide a medically supervised heroin detox program, overseeing the withdrawal period. In most cases, heroin detox withdrawal has its peak from 36-72 hours after the last dose of heroin, so having medical supervision to ensure appropriate measures are taken is very important for heroin detox.
Opiates refers to broader category than just heroin, including diamorphine (smack), and morphine. They include natural and synthetic narcotics such as morphine, codeine, oxycodone, oxycontin and hydrocodone. Opiate addiction (narcotic addiction) is often encountered when the patient becomes addicted after receiving opiates for pain control. Professionals seeking detox for opiates can receive expert treatment at our facility.
Marijuana (cannabis) Abuse:
Marijuana, also referred to as grass or pot, is the most commonly abused illegal drug in the United States according to certain agencies. Persons that smoke marijuana are often referred to as "potheads", and the use of marijuana can impair judgment and even lead to paranoia. Smoking marijuana can also dull perception and reduce concentration, which can affect a person's decision making process.
Methamphetamine (Meth, Crystal Meth) Addiction:
Methamphetamine use and addiction is one of the most rapidly growing problems facing many professionals across the United States. Methamphetamine(s), also referred to as "Meth" or "Crystal Meth", are stimulants that can cause a sense of euphoria that is very addictive. Methamphetamines are stimulants that increase brain activity for short periods of time, but as they are eliminated from the body the person can feel irritable, tired, exhausted, and desiring another hit of drug. Common street terms for methamphetamine(s) are Crank, Speed, Ice, Crystal, ChaChaCha, Crystal Meth, Chalk, and White Cross.
Meth addiction can occur rapidly. Meth addicts are often called tweakers (tweekers) and often have a characteristic thin appearance, may appear prematurely aged, and can have oral problems which result from smoking methamphetamine. The physical dependency on methamphetamine often manifests as anxiety, depression, obsessive behavior, and compulsion. In severe meth addiction, the person may experience hallucinations, delusions, aggression, and even death. Because of the physical and emotional dependency of meth addicts, it is important to have a medically supervised facility with qualified nurses and physicians to assist in the meth detox process.
