What Is Demerol?
Demerol is similar to morphine. It is a narcotic pain medicine used to treat moderate to severe pain. The white crystalline substance acts upon the central nervous system and “tricks” the brain by replacing the feeling of pain with a “high.”
Individuals who take Demerol for chronic pain may require more and more of it to get the same effect. If tolerance to Demerol continues to increase and the dosage is escalated above recommended levels, some people may develop convulsions, even if they don’t have a history of convulsive disorders). Therapeutic doses of Demerol have occasionally precipitated extremely severe, unpredictable and even fatal reactions in some patients.
Demerol has been around for a long time and it can be summed up in just a few words: Highly-addictive with a slew of side effects. Reports suggest that this drug had been administered to Michael Jackson before he collapsed and stopped breathing.
Demerol should be used with extreme caution in patients suffering from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or patients who have a substantially decreased respiratory reserve. Even usual therapeutic doses may diminish respiratory drive and increase airway resistance.
The Dangers and Symptoms of Demerol Abuse
Individuals who take Demerol in large amounts may eventually develop life-threatening side effects. Sharing Demerol with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse, is NOT recommended. The drug is usually being abused by crushing, chewing, snorting or injecting the dissolved product. Sadly, these practices may pose a significant risk to the abuser. Using Demerol in conjunction with alcohol or other illicit drugs, may cause central nervous system (CNS) depression.
Demerol abuse is usually associated with euphoria, difficulty concentrating, confusion, impaired cognitive and psychomotor performance. Individuals who have been using Demerol for a few weeks, should not attempt to get off the drug without consulting a physician.
Taking Demerol may produce a variety of side effects. The most commonly reported adverse reactions include:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Sedation
- Urinary retention
- Seizures
- Rapid heart rate
- Hallucinations
- Depression
Overdose may cause muscle flaccidity, respiratory depression, clammy skin, hypertension and coma. Fatalities may occur as a result of prolonged overdose.
Abrupt discontinuation of the drug may lead to unpleasant or severe withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms may include: Watery eyes, diarrhea, sweating, severe abdominal pain, tremors, irritability and more intense craving for the drug. Severe depression and vomiting are prevalent during the process. Furthermore, elevated heart rate and blood pressure may lead to a heart attack, blot clot or stroke. Chills, kicking movements of the legs, pale and clammy skin, anxiety, dehydration, thoughts of suicide are also very common.
