What Is Benzodiazepine?

Benzodiazepine, also known as Benzo, is a chemical substance that goes directly into the central nervous system. It affects brain function and leads to dramatic changes in mood, perception, cognition and behavior. Currently, there are more than 15 different types of Benzodiazepine on the market. One of the most widely prescribed medications in the United States, when properly used Benzo can treat a wide variety of physical and psychological ailments.

Benzodiazepine is frequently used to treat insomnia, relieve anxiety, reduce muscle spasms, or prevent seizures. It can even serve as a pre-medication for various medical and dental procedures. The most commonly prescribed Benzodiazepines include Xanax, Librium, Valium and Ativan. There is another Benzodiazepine that has been getting a great deal of media attention, Rohypnol— commonly called the "date rape" drug—that has been involved in many sexual assault cases over recent years.

The Dangers and Symptoms of Benzodiazepine Abuse

Benzodiazepine can be safe and effective in the short term. If used over a long period of time, the drug can cause serious adverse effects including:

  • Hostility
  • Amnesia
  • Irritability
  • Disturbing dreams
  • Physical dependence
  • Impaired judgment
  • Slurred speech
  • Tremors
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Respiratory problems

At some point, it may become nearly impossible for Benzo-dependent individuals to get off the drug without medical assistance. Continued use of the drugs can lead to blackout stages, rendering users incoherent, confused and totally unaware of their surroundings. Sadly, each blackout can last for several days, and some studies reveal that regular Benzo users run the risk of developing brain damage.

What’s more, concurrent use of alcohol or other depressants can be potentially life-threatening. Interestingly, a large percentage of people who enter treatment for cocaine addiction also report abusing Benzodiazepines. Benzo abuse is common among teenagers and young adults who take the drug to get “high.” It goes without saying that users who successfuly complete detox and rehab from Benzo drugs usually enjoy improved mental and physical health.

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms

Discontinuing the drug without proper medical attention may lead to severe, extremely unpleasant and painful withdrawal symptoms. Even slow and gradual weaning from Benzo is likely to result in prolonged withdrawal effects. These symptoms may include:

  • Extreme aggression
  • Anger
  • Terror
  • Mood fluctuations
  • Despair
  • Blurry vision
  • Deep depression
  • Obsessive thoughts
  • Hallucinations
  • Panic attacks
  • Suicide attempts
  • Severe chest pain and many other disturbing symptoms
