New York Alcohol & Drug Detox Facilities
The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services in 2006 reports 736 of the treatment centers in the New York were private non-profit while 143 were private for-profit and another 5 were owned or operated by a Tribal government. The total number had declined from 1,260 in 2002 to 1,030. During that time period, New York lost 150 private non-profit facilities, 58 private for-profit centers and 10 that were owned/operated by the state.
About 68% of New York detox and rehab centers in 2006 provided some form of outpatient treatment while the remaining facilities provided in-house/in-patient residential care. At that time, 209 facilities offered help for opioid addiction. 1,037 physicians and 282 programs had been certified to offer buprenorphine as treatment for opiate dependency.
When looking for a supervised medical detox program, there are actually very few specialized detox centers in New York or throughout the country. Although many rehabilitation centers may offer some type of detoxification program, this treatment could be completely holistic, possibly based solely on vitamins, saunas, yoga and meditation. A non-medical program may not be safe for alcoholics or drug addicts with extreme dependency and deteriorating health. Also, withdrawal symptoms may be so severe and painful that a patient can't continue with a "cold turkey" program. In fact, many of our patients are referred to us by rehab and recovery facilities.
