New Mexico Alcohol & Drug Detox Facilities
The 2006 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services shows the number of detox and rehab facilities in New Mexico has remained relatively stable at 120 since 2002. Eleven were owned or operated by tribal governments and 32 offered care in American Indian language.
In 2006, 103 of the detox and rehab centers offered some form of outpatient care while 31 provided in-house/in-patient residential programs. Ten centers were offering a program for opioid (opiates such as prescription pain killers and heroin) dependency, and 93 physicians and 13 programs were certified to provide buprenorphine for opiate addiction treatment.
When researching medical detox programs, you'll find there are very few specialized detox centers in New Mexico or anywhere else in the country. Although many rehab facilities offer some type of detoxification program, their detox program may be called "natural" or "holistic" meaning it's probably based on vitamins, saunas, yoga and meditation. A non-medical program may not be safe for alcoholics or drug addicts with serious dependency, especially those in questionable health. Also, withdrawal symptoms may be so severe and painful that a patient can't continue with a "cold turkey" program. In fact, many of our patients are referred to us by rehab and recovery facilities.
