The number of detox and rehab centers in Florida—based on annual surveys by the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS)— rose from 612 in 2002 to 668 in 2006. Over 50% were non-profit and about a third were for-profit operations. The jump in facilities was mostly due to 17 additional non-profits and 27 new for-profit centers.
Nearly 80% of Florida detox and rehab facilities in 2006 offered an outpatient treatment program, and the rest offered some type of in-house residential care. 608 physicians and 68 programs were certified to offer a buprenorphine program for opioid abuse.
Many rehabilitation centers offer a detoxification program although their treatment may be based on yoga, vitamins, saunas and meditation. This holistic treatment may not be safe for those with long-term or extensive alcohol or drug addiction. Also, withdrawal symptoms may be so severe and painful that a patient can't continue with a "cold turkey" program. In fact, many of our patients are referred to us by rehab and recovery facilities.
