Annual surveys by the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) indicate the number of detox and rehab treatment centers in Arizona has been stable since 2002. In 2006, statistics revealed most of the facilities (about 57%) were private non-profit operations, and the balance were for-profit, privately-run facilities. In Arizona, Tribal authorities owned or operated 20 treatment centers.

In 2006, about 80% of the detox and rehab centers offered some form of outpatient treatment while some provide in-house/in-patient residential care. There were 29 facilities offering a treatment plan for opioid (opiates such as prescription pain killers and heroin) abuse. Some 137 physicians and 40 programs were using buprenorphine treatment for opiate addiction.

When researching medical detox programs, you'll find there are actually very few specialized detox centers in Arizona or elsewhere in the country. Although many rehab facilities offer some type of detoxification program, their treatment program may be completely "natural" or "holistic" and based solely on vitamins, saunas, yoga and meditation. A non-medical program may not be safe for alcoholics or drug addicts with long-term dependency and questionable health. Also, withdrawal symptoms may be so severe and painful that a patient can't continue with a "cold turkey" program. In fact, many of our patients are referred to us by rehab and recovery facilities.
